The industrial and logistics port of Venice and that of Chioggia, more tied to a fish–based economy, are important points of the provincial infrastructure for the traffic of goods and movement of persons.
The port of Venice offers regular cargo Services which connect Venice with the main ports of the Mediterranean, such as: Alexandria, Haifa, Beirut, Istanbul, Pireo, Malta, Gioia Tauro and via transhipment with those of the rest of the world: South Africa, North and South America, the Far East and China, Australia and Oceania. Regular ferries and high speed ships (both for passengers and cargo) depart daily from the Venetian port connecting Venice with Greece, Turkey, Croatia, Dalmatia, and Istria.
The port of Venice, which handled over 26 million tons of goods in 2010, recorded an increase of 4,5% if compared with 2009.
In 2010, the movement of passengers reached 2,058,377, an increase of 9% compared with the previous year. It is a promising sector, linked to trans-Adriatic ferries, Mediterranean Cruises, and connected to the good progress of the traffic of the Marco Polo Airport, third national hub.
The port of Chioggia has experienced an important phase of development, thanks also to the recent structural and logistical renewal by ASPO, the special Company of the Venice Chamber of Commerce. In addition to being the main fishing port of the Veneto region, with a large and busy market, it has reached an impressive level of productivity and competitiveness compared with other Adriatic ports. 2010 was not a remarkable year for the port as the total movement of goods recorded 1.8 million tons, a decrease of 26.5% compared with the previous year.
